Imagine you’re in your car. You’re going sideways, very sideways on a wet road.
But this isn’t the story leading up to an accident. You’ve put yourself in the slide. And you’re having fun doing it.

This is the skidpan. On the 25th of March, the Toyota Twin Cam Club of South Africa hosted its first Skidpan Day for 2012 on Zwartkops Raceway’s own skidpan. The Twin Cams were sliding and the drivers were smiling. More than twenty Twin Cams were at Zwartkops on that Sunday, and some took to the ‘pan while others sat looking pretty. But there weren’t only Twin Cams at the event… We had a few Subaru’s, a Ford Fiesta, an automatic Mercedes-Benz C-Class, a Fiat Palio station-wagon (which was very bravely driven) and even a Nissan Hardbody (rear-wheel-drive fun!) taking part in the event.

All-in-all, more than 40 people attended the event, which is a good turnout. The day ran smoothly with the committee members once again introducing themselves to the crowd, and we were very pleased to announce that Keith Matthewson had re-joined the committee after a few years absence. We are very lucky to have Keith back on board, as he’s been involved with the club since its inception more than 20 years ago. He brings valuable knowledge and experience to the committee and we know that with his help, the club will continue to go from strength to strength.

After introducing the instructors from Toyota Advanced Driving, who would oversee the day and help each of the drivers to develop their wet driving skills, things got underway. All of the drivers were split into categories based on their previous skidpan experience. The TAD guys had set up a course to test the ability of the drivers to avoid accidents by quickly and safely changing lanes and some cars did attempt to eat the cones marking out the course. After this, a course was laid out to show the drivers how their cars understeer and oversteer in certain wet conditions. This was where some guys really had fun, while learning valuable skills that they could use every day. Even the TAD drivers took their diesel Hilux onto the skidpan to show that it is possible to do a controlled slide in even the most unlikely of vehicles.

At the end of the day, the TAD instructors laid out the final course – the gymkhana. Always the highlight of a skidpan event, the drivers once again took to the skidpan to set the best time they could. The competition was tough, with some very surprising driving from some of the entrants and a few very tough to beat times were set. At the end of the day, trophies were awarded to the three quickest drivers on the day – one from each class.

We’d like to thank everyone who made the journey to Zwartkops on the 25th. With support like that, there are only good things ahead for the Toyota Twin Cam Club. We hope that everyone had a great time on the day and we look forward to seeing even more Toyotas at our other events.

The Toyota Twin Cam Club of South Africa presents:

Driving in heavy rain can be nerve-wracking. It gets worse when you’re faced with a dangerous situation and where what really matters is a split-second decision, it’s easy to make the wrong one…

South African accident statistics say that over 1 000 road fatalities are reported every month, and that adds up to over 13 000 annually. Can you and your loved ones avoid being another statistic when it comes down to protecting yourself on wet roads in a dangerous situation? With a little help, protecting yourself could become a little easier.

The confidence of drivers and their ability to react quickly and correctly in these instances on our roads play a vital part in the outcome of the emergency situation drivers may be presented with. Confidence and ability behind the wheel are only gained by what you have learned to prepare you for these kinds of situations.

The TTCC is a firm believer in creating and promoting safe driving, driver awareness and preparation – for whatever driving-related scenario you may find yourself in. The Skidpan event, held annually at Zwartkops Raceway, assists drivers in mastering skid control and collision avoidance. On the Skidpan, the Toyota Advanced Driving (TAD) Instructors will take drivers through this comprehensive course and simulate emergency situations dealing with: – ABS braking – Cadence braking – Lane changes – Skid Control – Oversteer – Understeer

Over the years this event has been held, we have watched many a nervous driver be transformed into a confident, positive and in-control driver. We have received numerous letters of thanks from participants informing us of how the TTCC’s Advanced Driving & Collision Avoidance Event prepared them to avoid the emergency situations altogether or minimalise the effects of what could have been drastically worse or even fatal.

Apart from the priceless, life-saving advanced driving techniques participants will learn, the Skidpan is also great fun and yields no damage to vehicles in this controlled environment. No doubt there are quite a few people out there who’ve wanted to see how sideways they can get their car around a sharp corner in the wet. Those with rear-wheel-drive cars are probably at the top of that list. On the Skidpan, sideways is the new straight – and it’s all legal and completely safe. This is also the only event where you will find that should it rain, the event is only going to be more fun!

Advanced Driving Certification will be given to each competitor. This Certificate can be submitted to your short-term insurer, and at their discretion, they should decrease your premium slightly as your risk factor is now lower. Why pay thousands of rands for Advanced Driving Certification and know-how?

We are offering the very same benefits of this comprehensive course with Toyota Advanced Driving Instructors for:

Club-members: R300

Non-club members: R350

Spectators: Free

As always, there will be a ToyConvoy to the event. Multiple-car convoys are always exciting to be a part of. Seeing and being a part of a convoy with so many Toyotas in a line is really a sight to behold! It also makes for great photography…

We encourage you to join the convoy:
Venue: Caltex Maxi’s N1 North – exit side parking area (NOT UNDER THE BRIDGE)
Time: 11h45
Committee members Steven Darge and Jamey Brinkhuys will be there to meet everyone and take the convoy through to Zwartkops.
The convoy departs for the Skidpan at 12h30.

Looking forward to seeing you at the Skid Pan – where slipping and sliding has never been this much fun!

The Toy’s came. The owners saw. The club conquered.

The Toyota Twin Cam Club started off the 2012 events schedule with our AGM and Show ‘n Shine. Returning to the Zwartkops Raceway for the first time in many years, this event saw a record turnout of around 50 Toyotas pitching up, and some really epic Twin Cams graced the equally epic racetrack surroundings. Whether that was to enter, or simply just to attend, the Toyota fans came out in much bigger numbers than the previous 5 years.

To start the day off though, a Toy Convoy was held from the New Road Interchange on the N1 highway in Midrand a few hours earlier. The Convoy met up at the Caltex/Maxi’s, and while there were some communications problems after some guys met up underneath the bridge itself, all the cars met up a few hundred metres down the highway. The convoy got some great exposure to the public after they saw such an awesome display of mobile Twin Cams. We got plenty of pictures of the convoy on the move too!

A proverbial spanner in the works nearly caused an adverse start to the day’s proceedings when the designated area to be used for the event was found to be filled up by spectators of other events happening at Zwartkops, but problems were averted at the finding of an alternate part of the Raceway where we could fit all the cars.

So after relocating, a warm welcome was extended to the attendees by the TTCC’s Chairman and the new committee was introduced. After that, the new format of the event was explained – the major change being the revision of classes, as well as the addition of new classes.

The old format of the event consisted of:
Best Standard
Best Modified
Best Import
Best Overall

While the new format catered for:
“Queen Bee” (Best lady’s car)
“As it rolled off the showroom floor” (Best Standard)
“From the land of the Rising Sun” (Best Import)
“Passion for Performance” (Best Modified – Performance)
“If looks could kill” (Best Modified – Styling)
“Sound in motion” (Best I.C.E)
“Neat & discreet” (OEM Plus)
“One Toy to rule them all” (Best Overall, qualify for at least 4/7 classes)

Now increased to 8 classes from the original 4, the new classes clearly raised interest with many different Toyota drivers. Once voting got underway, it clear that the voters were having a difficult time deciding which cars to vote for. Who could blame them, with the amount of hot Toyotas that were there?

The Show ‘n Shine went very well – some amazing cars entered for the eight categories. While we only had one entry for the “Queen Bee – Best Lady’s Car” category, we’re certain that we’ll have more entries in that category at the next Show ‘n Shine. It’s not like the guys will be complaining about having more ladies around… The names of the winners and photos of their cars have been posted to the club’s Facebook page and onto the official website.

After all was said, done, and voted for, the votes were tallied up. Most of the classes were hotly contested, with either 2 votes or 1 vote determining the winner.

“Queen Bee” – Toyota Yaris TS – Alycia Ramlucken
“As it rolled off the showroom floor” – ’83 Corolla – Sameer Ali
“From the land of the Rising Sun” – Lexus IS300 -Biren Maharaj
“Passion for Performance” – Toyota Corolla RXi Turbo – Neil Beepaaj
“If looks could kill” – Toyota Corolla 160i Poovanesan Naidoo
“Sound in motion” – Toyota Conquest RSE – Naven Moodley
“Neat & discreet” – Toyota Corolla GLi Twincam Executice – Gerard Benedict
“One Toy to rule them all” – Lexus IS300 – Biren Maharaj

Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you to all who supported the event, making it a success.

In the end, the committee is incredibly happy and very pleased that the AGM was such a brilliant success. We had quite a few comments from some attendees saying that if this is the way club events are going to happen for the rest of the year, it’s going to be a great year for the club. We hope so too! And we think that it’s the members who will be the ultimate help in growing this club.

Pictures of the AGM have been uploaded onto the 2012 Gallery.

This years Track day was really something else. First off I would like to thank Toyota South Africa and especially Ferdi de Vos for his commitment to the club and for providing us with the Aygo Crazy what an awesome little car. Thank you to the Toyota Advanced drivers who were there on the day to provide us with insight on how to run your car safely at race speed round the track. All in all it was really an awesome day and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. We did have some laughs on the day as someone lost it on turn 8 and parked his conquest facing the way it came from (names will not be mentioned).

We had an array of cars there AE82 conquests N/A, supercharged and turbo ones and they really flew round the track there was a very neat 20v as well as the blue AE 92 running a 20v power plant, to think a year ago it went round the track as a normal 1.3. then there were the two avante’s that went round together which made me feel like I was in the 80’s when the 4AGE’s reigned supreme round the tracks in the world. The two MR2 spyder’s also learned something on the day it the top is down its just to cruise.

Toyota also borrowed us one of their rally drivers on the day to take the Aygo round and did it fly round I personally did not have the pleasure of going round in it but it seemed as if all the people that did go really enjoyed it to the max. So enough of my talking I will let the photos do the talking. Thank you to all who enjoyed the day with us and thank you for your support.

Wow what an awesome day this was. It was your typical winters morning in Jozi cold while the sun provided just enough heat to warm the bones as the cars started to pull in, I saw this was going to be a really great day. AE82 Conquests with superchargers and turbo’s said one thing Toyota is the brand for performance we don’t need to have a performance car we have old school cars that can compete with the best on the market.

There were really an array of vehicles on the day Runx RSi’s, 20v corollas a Opel 200ts a few Nissan S13’s (200sx) and a Ariel atom look alike with a 20v turbo but the really impressive one was Johnny’s Turbo MR2 who was the strongest turbo car on the day and he is also one of the honorary club members. Thags Govenders 1600 MR2 also impressed the crowed as you will see in the power figures it posted on the day. We also ran for the first time a 20v N/A class and this will be a permanent feature to our dyno days. 32 competitors in total decided to join us on the day while there were events all over JHB. A special thanks needs to go out to Manny and his crew for a really awesome day and to all the committee members and everyone who helped out on the day with the food and drinks and MO from Autostyle who donated all the trophy’s for the event. Thank you.

The morning started off with rain which I think put a lot off people off, however the rain played a great role in keeping the skidpan wet most of the day. We started off with registration as we had the afternoon session and there were 20 entrants on the day which made it enough so that everyone could have loads of fun on the day. Toyota South Africa was kind enough to send us one of there advanced driving instructors on the day.

We started off with braking on wet surfaces and all cars that had ABS were disconnected so the focus was drive in a straight line lock the wheels up and try and turn the vehicle end result was you go into a straight slide. There is the poor mans ABS as they would call it and that would be done by applying the brakes and when they lock up you release them and apply them again by doing that continuously you are mimicking how ABS works.

We then proceeded to do under steer and over steer by driving in a circle if you had a fwd car accelerating hard would make you under steer then if you pulled the hand brake up the rear end would come out and you will be over steering. If for example you had a rwd car like me over steer is fun as you power sliding your car and for me personally that is a lot of fun when you get it right.

We then tried our hand at a hand brake turn the object was to park your car sideways in the block of cones that was set out this however seemed to really show how people could handle their cars as a few people struggled with this.

We then proceeded to do a gymkhana and that was the part of the day that everyone was waiting for. There seemed to be a lot of rivalry between everyone as the wane brothers were the ones to beat at the event. In the end Owen Warne took 1st place with Earl Warne in 2nd place myself Pieter Roodt took home 3rd. I would like to thank Toyota South Africa for a really awesome event and to everyone that organized it well done. I know everyone can not wait for the next one.

The event was held at Kyalami go-kart track and there were an array of vehicles on from KE70 Corollas to Lexus is 200’s 20v chisel conquests a import RunX and fwd Levin and last but not least a supercharged chisel.

It was the usual hot summer’s day in Johannesburg and with all the beautiful Toyotas on display it was an awesome gathering of friends. Our chairman Thags Govender announced his retirement from the club but he will remain as an honourable club member to show the new guys the ropes. The new chairman Jamey Brinkhuys was introduced and we wish him all the best. We also heard that Toyota bought Subaru and we would like to welcome them as part of the family.

The car that won car of the year is owned by Megan Naidoo. It’s an imported Runx RSI with a superb looking kit and rims that sits perfect in the wheel wells, it really looks as if it was made to sit in there. There are plans to turbo the car but I don’t want to say too much now as there will be a full feature on the car done on the website later this year.

The other cars that really caught everyone’s eyes was the turbo 20v owned by Desigan Perumal and it’s a real sleeper of note the only thing that really gives it away is the front mount intercooler and the install was done really superbly. Then there was the silver avante of Pieter Mostert and all I can say is wow you can really see there is a lot of time and love that went into the car as it looks brand new and the kit really makes it uber hot. There are plans to drop it with another 20mm in the front to get it to sit super flush with the wheels. Thanks to all that came through to the event and remember to come to our club events then we can check out your ride and get it featured as car of the month.

Well that’s it from me I will let the pictures do the talking. Slide show below or view the full gallery here.
